'BioStim™ for Pelvic Floor Strengthening'

Dorothy Stevens RN RM
Continence Consultant and Practitioner

I use BioStim™ in the treatment of incontinence because it works. If one's bladder problems are urgency or frequency related, and the pelvic floor is very weak, BioStim™ is the treatment of choice. The use of BioStim™ for pelvic floor strengthening, or more exactly 'Neuro Muscular Stimulation', is based on successes in my own clinical practice and on results of overseas studies . For example, recent clinical studies in America showed a 73% cure and improvement rate using this technique (The Australian Continence Journal, 1996).

Neuro Muscular Stimulation (NMS) has a settling effect on the nerves responsible for irritable bladders - which is very important, because it is an irritable bladder which causes urgent and frequent trips to the toilet. Additionally, NMS strengthens the internal muscles of the bladder and related structures, giving better control. Similarly, the vaginal walls are strengthened, so decreasing prolapses and increasing sexual satisfaction.

BioStim™ can get some amazing results:

  • It enables people to get back to the sports they had given up, or were contemplating giving up, because of leakage or urgency.
  • It has helped women who have tried unsuccessfully, sometimes for years, to do pelvic floor exercises.
  • It has been used to decrease the amount of uterine prolapse - so preventing the need for surgery. As well as negating the need for surgery in cases of stress incontinence.
  • It has helped both men and women regain some of the lost joy in their intimate lives caused by the weakening of vaginal walls following the delivery of babies.
  • It has helped men regain control of urinary flow following prostate surgery, and some men with mild cases of impotence have been assisted by increased pelvic floor strength and increased blood flow.
  • And most importantly, it releases people from prisons they may have been in all their lives - even those who have tried many other methods without success.
