Australia has seen a fair amount of media coverage in the past 12 months about the problem of substance abuse. More particularly, how to get the user off illicit drugs for life. A range of possibillites were discussed, including ultra-rapid detoxification (at a clinic in Israel), amendment of the methadone guidlines, and even the Government sponsored distribution of heroin. At its peak, the tone of the public debate reached something near hysteria. While all of this was making headlines, a small, out-of-the-way clinic in the suburbs of Melbourne was making leaps and bounds in it's withdrawal program. They were using electrical stimulation as an adjunct to counselling - and getting tremendous results. In this issue, we hear their story, their opinions and look at some of the scientific research that supports electro therapy as a viable drug withdrawal tool. This
is the first of our Newsletter theme issues. Naturally all the articles
and links tie into this central idea - and we think rather successfully.
